High Winds Maul Main Street
The weatherman was on target with his call for strong winds in southeastern Colorado Tuesday, February 28. Winds in excess of 50mph were whipping up the usual tumbleweeds, but some business signs and businesses along Main Street in Lamar didn’t fare very well. CDOT Winter Storm Preparations
CDOT maintenance crews are on, or will be on, snow-shift tonight throughout southeastern Colorado. Snow shift denotes a 12-hour on/12-hour off work time. . Blizzard Recovery
It didn’t take very long for blizzard-like conditions to affect highway travel in southeast Colorado and Lamar. The weather service made the call late Saturday, early enough to give some folk time to make preparations. Southeastern Colorado Road Conditions
The Colorado Department of Transportation now is on snow shift through southeastern Colorado – areas including Lamar, Springfield, La Junta and Trinidad. Lamar investigates Possible Lead Contamination in Dead Cattle
On Thursday, May 12, 2011, the City of Lamar was notified that 23 calves pastured on land leased from the City had died. Two of the animals were autopsied and it was determined that death was due to lead contamination. There are a number of possible sources of lead in the environment. Tornadoes have killed several hundred persons and caused tens of millions of dollars in property damage in the southeast part of the country so far this spring. One thousand acres of land in a two-mile stretch, running along highway 196 north of Lamar, burned this past Friday night and Saturday morning, caused by an out of control camp fire. 13,500 acres of prairie have been burned in the Bent County fire since Saturday afternoon.
