Southeast Colorado Farmers Eligible for Drought Relief Assistance

U.S. Senator Mark Udall announced  on Monday, June 27,  that farmers and ranchers in southeastern Colorado counties that have been hard-hit by the drought are now eligible for emergency assistance through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Gov. Hickenlooper seeks federal drought assistance

DENVER ­— Thursday, June 16, 2011 — Gov. John Hickenlooper sent a letter today to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack requesting drought assistance for Baca, Crowley and Otero counties. “ Colorado ’s southern counties are experiencing significant drought resulting in failed grain crops as well as the loss of forage for livestock,” the governor’s letter said. La Nina conditions are expected to weaken into June, which is expected to bring dry conditions for the eastern plains and southern Colorado. Prowers County Receives Low Health Ranking in State Assessment

A new study by the Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation places Prowers County close to the bottom of healthy counties in Colorado, and ranks Huerfano County last. Douglas County is ranked number 1.
