Scholarship Winners Announced

Winners of the 2012 Daniel Kasza Memorial Scholarships were recently announced. Two scholarships were given to McClave School graduates, and one scholarship was awarded to a District VI 4-H member.

McClave High School graduating senior Brittney Kemp received a $500 scholarship, as did McClave alumnus Natasha Idler. Kemp will be attending Colorado State University Fort Collins, majoring in Biochemistry. An honor student, she was co-valedictorian her class. Her goal is to combine her love of children and passion for science by pursuing a pediatrics or pediatric occupational therapy degree.

Idler was a 2010 McClave graduate, and graduated from Lamar Community College in 2011. For the past year, she has been working full-time to earn money to attend Pueblo Community College to become a Dental Hygienist. She is an active volunteer with the local nursing home and at her church.

The Daniel Kasza Memorial 4-H Scholarship was awarded to Briana Huff of Swink High School. A fourteen-year 4-H member, Huff has been a strong role model and mentor for youth in Otero County. She will be attending Otero Junior College. The 4-H scholarship was open to graduating seniors who were 4-H members in Baca, Bent, Crowley, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Otero and Prowers counties.

The scholarships are given in memory of Daniel Kasza through many generous donations. A McClave High School graduate, Kasza was a student at Ft Lewis College at the time of his death in June 2009. These scholarships were given to the 4-H and McClave communities because of their influence on Kasza.

Zonta Club Sponsorship

The Zonta Club of Prowers County will be sponsoring a young woman to the American Legion Girls State to be held this year in Gunnison at Western State College on June 10-15, 2012.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for juniors in high school to learn about government and to gain leadership skills.   All interested students in their junior year at a Prowers county high school are urged to apply for the trip.  Contact your school counselor, or Zonta member Kathy Wootten at 336-7634, for more information.
