Prowers County Residents Enjoy a Full Weekend of Events

Colorado Employment Situation – May 2012
Employers in Colorado added 2,000 nonfarm payroll jobs from April to May for a total of 2,291,700 nonfarm payroll jobs, according to the survey of business establishments. Private sector payroll jobs increased 2,300 and government decreased 300. According to the survey of households, the unemployment rate increased two-tenths of one percentage point over the month to 8.1 percent. Search Narrowing for Lamar City Administrator
The City of Lamar received 19 applications for the position of city administrator by the June 1 deadline, according to interim administrator Steve Rabe. Weather Delayed Relay for Life Works Around Saturday Storm
Due to the Saturday afternoon storm, June 2, opening ceremonies for the annual Lamar Relay for Life were moved to the Community Building. Once the weather improved all the equipment and people made their way back to Merrill Brush Stadium to readjust to the delayed schedule. May 2012 Hydrology Report from NWS-Pueblo
The snowpack readings almost melted out completely in May. Near the end of the month, automated sensors indicated that snowpack levels were running just 12% of average in the Arkansas Basin and just 3% of average in the upper Rio Grande Basin. Prowers County Sheriff’s Report, April 2012
The Prowers County Sheriff’s Office responded to 315 service calls this past April, 2012. Lamar posted 159, Holly had 37, Wiley had 10 calls for service and there were 100 calls in the county. Lamar’s breakdown has 40 jail related calls and 19 warrant arrests. Three calls were for DUI’s, two for drugs and three for traffic accidents. LUB Assesses Tornado Damages
The April 27 tornado depleted Lamar Light and Power’s inventory with needed replacements for the electrical distribution system. Interim Light Plant Superintendent Houssin Hourieh said power was finally restored to the entire service area after 16 hours. The tornados knocked down or damaged 16 steel poles, 29 wooden poles, 11 pole mount transformers, 40 cross arms, two circuit closers and a two-way radio repeater. Granada Trustees Tackling City Junk Vehicle Ordinance
The Granada Town ordinance regulating junked vehicles is back on the drawing board for new language to include use of car covers in lieu of constructing fencing to block the view of junked or non-operable vehicles within the city limits.
