August Has Mixed Precipitation Levels for Southeast Colorado
The National Weather Service precipitation reports for southeast Colorado for August do not offer any trend or pattern, compared to last year. PMC Recall Election Initiated for Ruedeman, Campbell
Local residents, as well as some PMC board members were taken by surprise, by the announcement of a recall petition drive for two of the newest members of the Prowers Medical Center board of directors, Candy Ruedeman and Marge Campbell. Dollar and Cents Discussion at PCDI Board Meeting
Prowers County Development Incorporated board members are discussing a means of maintaining their funding sources for the next several years. The economic development group, like 95% of other similar organizations across the state, receives their operating funds from government sources. For PCDI, that’s the county and the city of Lamar. Entertainment, BBQ and Auction Combine for Lamar Area Hospice
A casual dress, dinner dance and auction held this past Saturday, August 27, helped raise funds for the Lamar Area Hospice. The annual event was held out doors at Brad Semmens’ Country Acres RV Park and Motel and catered by Mike Marinac’s Caterers. Two Internal Medicine Doctors Join PMC Staff
Doctors Jeniffer Chiu and Camillo Franklyn have been hired by Prowers Medical Center. Dr. Chiu will begin her practice on Monday, August 29 and Dr. Franklyn will begin on September 1. LCC, Modern and Historical Perspectives Being Pursued
Old and new will mix at Lamar Community College this fall and next year. LCC President John Marrin said plans are underway to conduct an almost year-long observance of the college’s 75th anniversary next year. National Weather Service Reports A Slight Drop in Drought
An updated Drought Information Statement from the National Weather Service in Pueblo has indicated some improvement in drought conditions as beneficial rain continues to fall across south central and southeast Colorado, as of August 25, 2011. The current U.S. Drought Monitor has trimmed Exceptional Drought Conditions (D4) to include southeastern Alamosa County as well as southern Baca County. Granada Town Board Facing Budget Increases
The Granada Trustees will be covering their 2012 budget with a fine tooth comb this fall, attempting to find extra revenues for additional expenses. Two areas were noted during the August 24 meeting, a request for E-9-1-1 funding from the Prowers County Commissioners; and the other added expense will be for repairs along the town’s 200 foot long levee. Recycled Cans Stolen from SDS in Lamar
Apparently someone has been helping themselves to the bags of soda cans intended to be recycled by SDS in Lamar. Kim Engsburg, executive director for Southeastern Developmental Services, said that on the past two Mondays, when the staff handles piles of the bagged cans dropped off at the collection site, there are hardly any bags at all. July 2011, Prowers County Sheriff Report
The Prowers County Sheriff’s Office responded to 334 calls for service in July 2011. Lamar led all other towns in the county with 133 calls, followed by 36 in Holly and 23 in Wiley. Of the Lamar calls, 39 were jail related and 11 for warrant arrests. There were no calls in those categories for Holly and one fraud/forgery case in Wiley. LUB Approves Customer Rate Increase
Lamar Utilities Board members approved a 2.5% rate increase effective November 1, 2011. This will be combined with an Emergency ECA, Electric Cost Adjustment of 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour up to a 12 month period. The increase for an average residential customer will amount to about $10 per month. Final Chance Offered on County-City IGA
An intergovernmental agreement proposal between the Lamar Redevelopment Authority and Prowers County that is almost two years, old got a last-minute breath of life at Monday’s city council meeting, August 22. Salute the Tinman Triathlon Athletes
Bryce Hiigel turned in the fastest time for this year’s Tinman Triathlon in Lamar, sponsored this past Saturday, August 20 at Willow Creek Park. Each year, the Lamar Parks and Recreation Department hosts the triathlon which is open to men, women, kids and team competition.
