On Thursday, May 12, 2011, the City of Lamar was notified that 23 calves pastured on land leased from the City had died. Two of the animals were autopsied and it was determined that death was due to lead contamination. There are a number of possible sources of lead in the environment. Health officials at the Prowers County Public Health & Environment Department are working with the City of Lamar, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and the Colorado Department of Agriculture to investigate lead contamination from a water tank near Lamar. An area of thunderstorms moving through Prowers County shortly after 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 24th, and developed  a brief land spout tornado approximately 5 miles east of Lamar, near the intersection of US Highway 50 and County Road 13.  The tornado lasted for approximately 5 minutes from 2:10 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.  The tornado caused no damage, and therefore, is rated EF0. The Lamar Utility Board approved a joint operating agreement making light plant superintendent Rick Rigel interim ARPA general manager, replacing Bill Leung, effective July 1. Lamar police officers received some OJT, on-the-job-training, this Tuesday morning, May 24. Working with members of the Colorado State Patrol, the officers were flagging southbound commercial vehicles along highway 287 and performing routine safety inspections.
